SafeSeed Wallet
Set up your SafeSeed hardware wallet — step by step
Follow this guide to unpack, initialize, pair with the desktop app, generate a recovery seed, and apply security best practices so your keys stay offline and safe.
1 — Unbox & prepare
Inspect the sealed packaging and the tamper-evident seals before opening. Only proceed if seals look intact. Work on a clean surface and avoid taking photos of any seed or private key information during setup. Prepare a pen and the supplied seed card or a secure backup solution.
Connect and power
Connect the SafeSeed device to your computer using the supplied cable. If using a mobile device, follow the mobile pairing instructions in the official app. Allow the device to install drivers if prompted by the operating system.
Install the desktop app
Download the official SafeSeed desktop app from the canonical URL. Verify checksums or code signatures if provided. Install and open the app: it will guide you through pairing and firmware checks.
Initialize device
Choose “Create new wallet” if this is a new device. The device will generate a cryptographically random recovery seed. Confirm on the hardware screen that the device displays the words and accepts your button presses to advance — never reveal the seed to the host computer.
Set a PIN
Choose a device PIN. Avoid trivial pins and do not store the PIN alongside your recovery seed. The PIN prevents local access to the device if it is stolen.
2 — Back up your recovery seed
The recovery seed is the master key to your funds. Write it down on the provided seed card or use a hardened metal backup. Keep multiple copies in geographically separated, secure locations such as a safe or bank deposit box.
- Write seeds by hand on offline paper/metal
- Store copies in separate secure places
- Test recovery on a spare device (with small funds)
- Take photos or store seeds in cloud services
- Share your seed with anyone claiming to be support
- Reuse passwords across services
If your device supports a passphrase (optional), consider using one for hidden wallets — but remember that passphrases that are lost are unrecoverable. Document your passphrase storage plan securely.
3 — Pair with apps & manage accounts
Open the SafeSeed desktop app and select "Pair device". The app will detect your hardware wallet and request an on-device confirmation. Approve pairing on the device to establish a secure channel. Create account labels and inflow/outflow addresses in the app for each currency you manage.
When sending funds, always verify the destination address on the hardware device screen. This prevents address-rewrite malware from substituting an attacker-controlled address.
4 — Security best practices
Use full-disk encryption on machines that interact with your wallet. Keep your desktop OS and the wallet app updated. Only install apps and browser extensions from trusted sources. Keep firmware current but verify update signatures before installing.
Enable any additional device-level protections such as auto-lock and wipe after several incorrect PIN attempts. Maintain a small testing procedure for recovery: restore the seed to a spare device and confirm you can access the expected accounts before moving large balances.
5 — Troubleshooting & support
If the device is not detected, try another USB cable or port. Reboot your host system and open the SafeSeed app. Check device firmware status in the app and review official troubleshooting articles. Never use third-party troubleshooting services that ask for your seed or private keys.
In case of suspected compromise, move funds to a new wallet whose keys were generated on a secure device after you confirm the integrity of your environment.
6 — Advanced workflows
Advanced users can configure multi-signature schemes, integrate with cold storage workflows, and use air-gapped signing via PSBT (Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions) or QR-based signing. Maintain clear operational procedures and access controls when using wallets for institutional custody.
